Reading about New Materialism (2)

This week, I keep reading articles about New Materialism.

"new materialism attempts to offer a different perspective to signification, materiality, and methodologies of crafting knowledge."

If there is a war happen at 1880, Monet can not drawing 22 wheatstacks.
Only in piece time, artists can be relax.
I will create a different perspective of Wheatstacks, or other masterpieces.

"New Materialism is a category of theories that were generated as a response to the linguistic turn. Infused with commitments to specific knowledge-becoming practices and a history linked to feminisms."

"Women Comprise Nearly Half of Gamer Population"
http://www.theesa.com/newsroom/release_detail.asp?releaseID=202

"the most frequent game purchasers, 54% are male and 46% are female"
http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2013.pdf

New Materialism also have a strong related to feminisms. To my surprise, 46% female playing video games. But in fact, almost every main characters in video games are male.
I think this could be kind of inspiration for me to work on second part of vignette.

"In art this analysis could be the study of matter and meaning"
http://newmaterialistscartographies.wikispaces.com/New+Materialism

"study of matter and meaning" just remind me to René Magritte 's surrealistic art. Magritte like to use "materials" in his painting, but shows another meaning of that symbol.
I hope it could be the third vignette.

concept art (1)

I used pixel in Photoshop to illustrate the concept about Grain stacks animation.
It could be look like this.

 concept 1

concept 2

I think pixel is similar to the method of impressionism. they both use dots to express the shape and color. In these concept, I drew the "penumbra" which is very ambiguity. I pay attention on the stacks more than background because I want the stacks to be the main character.(In original painting, all brush looks alike the same.) It could be an installation or a real time clock if I make it animated.

Reading about New Materialism (1)

In this week, I've read a lot information about New Materialism from the internet.(I've also checked in our library but I found nothing about New Materialism there.)
I believe it's very important to have a research on the term before I start to doing some artwork.
Here's something I got from these reading. I think they are useful inspiration to my work:

New Materialism brings into focus and explains the significance of the innovative materialist critiques that are emerging across the social sciences and humanities.

http://books.google.com/books/about/New_Materialisms.html?id=S_2WngEACAAJ

This book explained New Materialism has a wide, extensive category of theories, and it had a effect on social and political relationships.
The authors also describe how the currents in New Materialism can be traced to several different fields, and they identify three main branches: ontology, agency and politics - that's there thing I must consider when I do my own artwork.

New materialism is a collective name for recent currents and developments within the social sciences and humanities. Within this relatively broad and diverse discourse, new ways of thinking about the role of subjects in relation to material objects in different contexts are raised.

In the blackout of the system, many different things were identified to have contributed, some of which were directly related to objects rather than subjects.

Scholars involved with New materialism tend to think about the world as more of a complex and process oriented entity, rather than as a clear and direct action-response based one.

This is the most useful article I got in this week. It talks about New Materialism in many ways. Lots of example helps me to understand what the New Materialism is, especially the portrait photograph example.

This book is the first monograph on the theme of “new materialism,” an emerging trend in 21st century thought that has already left its mark in such fields as philosophy, cultural theory, feminism, science studies, and the arts.

New Materialism is a title intended to provoke. The authors concede that the book's various arguments are not exactly new, and further, that certain expressions of materialism are uncannily immaterial.

This is an abstract of a book. It offered another view on New Materialism.

After these reading, I've known that New Materialism has a wide, extensive category of theories. In next couple of weeks, I'll keep reading articles about New Materialism to dig deeper about this theory. Now I'm interested in make animation based on Monet's Grain stacks series and Magritte's On the Threshold of Liberty.

Welcome to the wonderful 8-bit world!

I'm Ace, an animator, manga fan, and also a hardcore game player and the one full of the experience about game design and animation art. I try to find out and enjoy the arts in the video games, especially the pixel art.

Everyone knows the video games, but how do you think about it? Toys of children? time killer? or...addicted drugs? No! It's wonderful art! Don't you believe it? Tetris and PAC-MAN are now in MOMA as interactive art works. I believe video game is kind of the art because it includes many kind of art. Every video game build with picture, story, music and sometimes movie, sculpture and dancing in it. And the most impressive improvement of the video game is, it can manipulate by people, player can join a new world made by computer language!
